FISTULA IN ANO

It is a tunnel that develops between the inside of the anus and outside skin around the anus. Most fistulas are the result of an infection that start in an anal gland. The infection causes an abscess that drain on its own or is drained surgically through the skin next to the anus. This drainage tunnel remains open and connects the infected anal gland or the anal canal to a hole in the outside skin around the anus. It can be low level or high level.

Low level – open into the anal canal below the internal ring.

High level – open into the anal canal at or above the internal ring.

 

 

GOODSALL’S RULE

One of the most commonly sited principles to assist in the management of an anal fistula. Fistula with an external opening in relation to the anterior half of the anus is of direct type. Fistulas with external opening in relation to the posterior half of the anus, has a curved track may be of horse – shoe type, opens in the midline posteriorly and may present with multiple external opening all connected to a single internal opening.

People with fistula have severe anal pain, inflammation, rectal bleeding, sometimes it associated with fever.

CAUSES

  • Inflammatory bowel disease ( such as Crohn’s disease)
  • Ulcerative colitis
  • Tuberculosis
  • Hidradenitis suppurativa ( abscess in sweat gland in perianal region )
  • Anal sexually transmitted diseases
  • Trauma

DIET

  • Avoid salty diet especially while taking medicines like parangipattai pathangam, sanda rasa parpam.
  • Keep the body hydrated, which helps to flush out toxins and stools ( avoids constipation).
  • Fiber-rich diet, foods eg; brown rice,barley,oats, green leafy vegetables, lentils, fruits and vegetables with vitamin – C.
  • Pappaya helps to prevent constipation
  • One glass of gooseberry juice or 1 to 2 glasses of orange juice are good in case of anal fistula.

  • Vajrasana ( thunder bolt pose)
  • Pavanamuktasana ( wind relieving pose)
  • Malasana ( garland pose)
  • Balasana ( child pose)
  • Adho mukha svanasana ( downward facing dog pose)
